About Indian Newspapers
First major newspaper in India was The Bengal Gazette. It started in 1780 under the British Raj by James Augustus Hickey. Other newspapers such as The India Gazette, The Calcutta Gazette, The Madras Courier (1785), The Bombay Herald (1789) etc. soon followed. These newspapers carried news of the areas under the British rule. The Bombay Samachar, founded in 1822 and printed in Gujarati is the oldest newspaper in Asia still in print. On May 30, 1826 Udant Martand (The Rising Sun), the first Hindi-language newspaper published in India, started from Calcutta (now Kolkata), published every Tuesday by Pt. Jugal Kishore Shukla.
Newspaper sale in the country increases every year. By 2007, 62 of the world’s best selling newspaper dailies were published in China, Japan, and India. India consumed 99 million newspaper copies as of 2007 - making it the second largest market in the world for newspapers. According to the 55th report of The Registrar of Newspapers for India (RNI), the total circulation of newspapers in India increased by 8.23% during the period 2010-11. Indian Readership Survey (IRS) says, the print news media reaches over 250 million readers. These enormous numbers, the survey suggests, represent a chain of growth, driven both by expanding literacy and improved living standards.
Now, the progress has been so much that every major newspaper from india has an internet edition and you can read any India newspaper online. There are approximately 82,222 registered newspapers in India. Official figures are not readily available, but a conservative estimate would be that there are an additional 5,000 titles published elsewhere in India. While we have most of the popular newspapers already listed, as we grow, we’ll try to add all the newspapers available out there.
