فالخليفة عند السنة يخلف بتعيينه حاكماً على الأمة، وعندالشيعة هو الإمام ولا يشترط أن يكون الإمام حاكماً. لا يطبق الآن نظام الخلافة منذ سقوط السلطان العثماني عام1924م.
